Now tell me, what comes first: cereals or milk? For me cereals, without any doubt. Actually, they have to pass through my mouth. No need for milk, especially if they are these healthy homemade cereals. With chocolate chips, it will feel like eating mini cookies for breakfast!

    The ingredients for homemade cereals

This homemade cereal recipe is incredibly simple. It only uses a handsome of ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen. And unlike the ones you buy, these cookie cereals contain no refined flour, white sugar or any other nasty ingredient.

    • Egg – Besides binding the dough, a fresh egg will improve both taste and texture of your chocolate chip cereals.
    • Oat flour – I usually buy it, but you can also make your own. It’s so easy, just blend the oats into fine powder and you’re ready to bake. Bonus tip, make more and save for your next recipes.
    • Almond flour – For the best outcome, make sure to use almond flour and not almond meal. While they are very similar, almond flour is much better for baking.
    • Coconut sugar – For healthy cookie cereals, this recipe uses coconut sugar. As it is entirely made from coconut, this sweetener is a more nutritious alternative to saccharose (aka white sugar). Same taste, or even better!
    • Oil – I used extra virgin coconut oil, but you are free to select any other oil you like (more details will come in the next paragraph).
    • Baking powder and baking soda – Used together, these ingredients work as leavening agent and improve the texture of your cookie cereals.
    • Salt – A pinch of salt balances the sweetness and enhances the flavors.
    • Chocolate chips – As this is a cookie cereals recipe, the chocolate chips are a must. I like it dark, but also milk chocolate works.

    Substitutes

In case you are still missing something, here is a list of all the possible substitutes. For some ingredients, such as baking powder or chocolate chip, there is no replacement because they are necessary. I tried to be as complete as possible. But if you still have doubts, leave a comment down below and I’ll be happy to help you.

    • Egg – Replace with a flaxseed egg or any vegan alternative to eggs.
    • Oat flour – Although I do not recommend it, you can substitute with whole wheat flour or all purpose flour
    • Almond flour – As an alternative you can use more oat flour. But the result won’t be exactly the same (not recommended).
    • Coconut sugar – Replace with brown sugar, date sugar any with other granular sweetener of your choice. Maple syrup or honey cannot be used for this recipe.
    • Oil – This recipe works with any type of oil, but preferably it should have neutral flavor. Some ideas are coconut oil, canola oil, avocado oil or seed oil. As an alternative, also melted butter works.

How to make cookie cereals at home?

You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to make cookie cereals at home. Believe me, you will never buy cereals again.

    • Prepare the oven for baking. First of all, pre-heat the oven to 175°C (350°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    • Mix the dry ingredients. In a bowl, combine the oat flour, the almond flour, the baking soda, the baking powder and the salt.
    • Mix the moist ingredients. In a separate bowl, whisk the coconut sugar together with the oil and the egg.
    • Combine everything. Using a wooden spoon or spatula, stir everything together until combined.
    • Make the cereal cookies. Scoop out a spoon dough onto the parchment paper-lined baking sheet, shaping it into small balls. Add the chocolate chips and with the help of your fingers, gently flatten each cookie.
    • Cook: Bake in hot oven for 10-12 minutes and let cool before serving. Enjoy your chocolate chip cereal bowl with a good splash of milk!

    How to store homemade cereals

Before storing, allow the cereals to cool. Once cooled, place into an airtight food container and store. At room temperature, they will stay fresh for up to 3 days. In the fridge, homemade cereals will last for up to a week.

    How to eat cookie cereals

If you have read until now, you probably know how much I love those chocolate chip cookie cereals. So much that my favorite way of eating them is actually alone, spoon after spoon. But still, let me give you a couple of ideas on how you can serve your homemade cereals. For breakfast, as a dessert or whenever you have cravings.

    • With milk: A great classic, most people like eating their cereals with milk. Especially if they come with chocolate chips, like these. I like it cold, but also warm milk is perfect – it will make your chocolate melt!
    • With yogurt: For a more satisfying meal, I recommend serving your cereals with a bowl of Greek yogurt or any other yogurt. And as the mini cookies are already sweet, make sure you use an unsweetened and unflavored yogurt.
    • Alone: This is probably my favorite: grab a spoonful and devour! Crunch crunch, they’re honestly so good by themselves.

    Recipe tips

Do you want to make the best oat cereals? Then be sure to read very carefully the tips that I’m about to give you.

    • Do not replace the oat flour and especially the almond flour. Using a mix of two types of flour makes the difference.
    • Do no skip the oil. If you don’t add oil, the cookie cereals will turn out very dry.
    • Make sure you do not over-bake the oat cereals. The baking time should be no more than 12 minutes.
    • After baking, let the mini chocolate chip cookies cool. Once cooled, they are ready to enjoy!
    • Last but not least, serve your homemade cookie crisps with cold milk. Maybe it’s me, but with cold milk they hit different. So crunchy!
