Ingredients to make Chocolate Oatmeal Waffles

    • Oat flour – I love using oat flour because it keeps me satisfied for hours without feeling hungry.
    • Quick oats – You can also use rolled oats
    • Cacao powder – I use unsweetened cacao powder. Which is packed with nutrients like iron, magnesium, potassium and fiber.
    • Any granulated sugar – I use erythritol to keep these waffles recipe completely sugar-free. But you can use any sugar available in your pantry.
    • Flaxseed – Another powerful food. High in Omega-3, fiber and you won’t taste anything of it. Great for an egg replacement.
    • Pinch of salt – Great to enhance all the flavors.
    • Milk of choice – I use unsweetened almond milk, which has many healthy benefits, doesn’t raise blood sugar, it’s high in vitamin D and may strengthen your bones.
    • Dead banana – Which means a VERY RIPE one to give the hint of sweetness and texture.
    • Coconut oil – Make sure to choose organic or extra virgin to get all the health benefits.
    • Maple syrup – For the homemade chocolate sauce. But you can use honey instead.
    • vanilla extract – For the hint of essence.
    • Baking powder
    • Strawberries

How to make Chocolate Oatmeal Waffles?

    • Prepare batter – Once you have gathered all the measured ingredients. In a bowl, start adding the dry ones and stir until well combined. Therefore, in a separate bowl mix in, the coconut oil, mashed banana, milk of choice, maple syrup and vanilla extract. After that, add everything together and stir until you get a smooth batter.
    • Prepare waffle maker – Grease the waffle maker. Preferably, melted coconut oil using a brush (my choice) it can also be coconut oil cooking spray or any oil of your desire.  Then, heat up waffle maker, the light must be on.
    • Cook – Pour batter onto the hot waffle maker and close the lid. Let cook waffles for 5 minutes until the light changes. Could be longer, but this will depend on the power of your waffles maker. Repeat the process with the rest of the batter.
    • Remove waffles – Once the light of the waffles maker has changed, remove waffles and place them on a dish or cooling rack to let them cool to room temperature. They will be soft at first when you take them out of the waffle maker but they will harden as they cool.
    • Serve – Enjoy your waffles with the homemade chocolate sauce or any of your favorite toppings you would like to add.

How to make the homemade chocolate sauce?

This chocolate sauce has only 3 ingredients! First, you will need to sift the unsweetened cacao powder to avoid clumps! Therefore, mix with maple syrup or honey to give a hint of sweetness. And for the latter add any milk of choice to thin out the sauce.

You won’t ever need to buy chocolate sauce at the grocery store anymore.

    It’s healthy and delicious.

Toppings options for these Chocolate Oatmeal Waffles

Choosing your favorite toppings is the best. You will enjoy it even MORE!

    • Fresh fruits: Strawberries, banana slices, blueberries, raspberries or cherries.I would go for any berry fruit, as they give a perfect balance and flavor.
    • Yogurt: a spoonful of yogurt on top. Could be plant-based or greek yogurt. They give a touch of creaminess to the palate.
    • Crunchy toppings: Like, cacao nibs, almond slices, or any other nuts.
    • Drizzle with maple syrup, homemade chocolate sauce, peanut butter, almond butter. Any of these go perfect as well.

    Tips for storing Chocolate Waffles

    • To store: If you didn’t finish all the waffles, store it in the fridge in an airlight container, for up to a week.
    • To freeze: If you would like to save for later, these waffles can be kept in the freezer for up to 3 months. So, what you will do is to take your cooked and cooled waffles and store them in a freezer zip-lock bag.
    • To reheat: If stored in the fridge, microwave for 45 seconds. Be careful nor to overheat them. If stored in the freezer, thaw on room temperature first and then microwave for 45 seconds as well.  Enjoy with extra chocolate sauce in both cases!

    Substitutions and notes

    • Don’t like bananas? No worries, replace with 1/2 cup of applesauce.
    • Don’t have oat flour? You can use substitute with whole grain flour or simply blend rolled oats in a food processor.
    • Gluten-free? Use a certified gluten-free oats.
    • No maple syrup? Use date syrup or honey (If you are not vegan)
    • No coconut oil? Use avocado oil or any oil of choice.
