This Graveyard Overnight Oats is a healthy, delicious, and fun breakfast to make for Halloween. This recipe is vegan, simple, and fast to make. Only 10 ingredients are required. Tastes like dessert for breakfast and it’s high protein, fiber and I promise you won’t be hungry for hours!
What are overnight oats?
I could call them a “time saver breakfast” because you literally add all the ingredients into a container or mason jar, refrigerate overnight and breakfast is ready the next morning. They are generally served chilled but if you prefer to eat it warm, microwave for 45-60 seconds.
I discovered Overnight Oats when I was in my Sophomore year at Uni! My classes used to start at 7:00 A.M. so I needed to make a “Grab & Go” breakfast. I needed something filling so I wouldn’t get hungry in a few hours! Microwave oatmeal was my fastest breakfast but it was still taking me time. So I decided to make it overnight! Since then, it has been my all time go-to breakfast.
Ingredients to make Graveyard Overnight Oats
- Rolled oats – You can use any type of oats like, quick oats, old fashioned and gluten-free in case you are intolerant to gluten.
- Chocolate protein powder – The protein powder is completely optional, but I like to add it for the extra amount of protein and also taste amazing!!
- Cacao powder – Preferably use an unsweetened cacao powder because the protein powder is already sweetened. Even if you omit it you will be adding sweetener later on as well.
- Milk of choice – Feel free to add the one of your preference. I use unsweetened almond milk, which has many healthy benefits, doesn’t raise blood sugar, it’s high in vitamin D and may strengthen your bones.
- Greek yogurt – Greek yogurt was my personal choice but you can also use plain yogurt. We will be using it for the layers of our overnight oats.
- Instant coffee – Any works! I use Decaf instant coffee but feel free to use regular instant coffee.
- Chocolate Spread – I used Chocolate Protein Spread and it’s soooo good! It’s high protein, low sugar and no palm oil.
- Lotus Biscoff Biscuit – The perfect shape to recreate the “headstone“
- Oreos – We will be using crushed oreos to recreate the “soil” in front of the tomb!
- Chocolate frosting – I used Betty Crocker’s Chocolate frosting for cookies decoration to draw the “RIP” word on the headstone.

The instructions
- Prepare – Gather and measure all the ingredients, start off by mixing the rolled oats, unsweetened cacao powder, instant coffee and chocolate protein powder in a bowl or jar and mix well. Consequently add-in milk and stir until well combined.
- Assemble – On a jar or glass, add around 2-3 tbsp of the oatmeal batter and then intercalate with 2-3 tbsp of greek or plain yogurt. Repeat the same process until finishing oatmeal batter. After that, add the chocolate spread on top.
- Refrigerate – Cover jar or glass with a plastic wrap or lid and leave in the fridge overnight. In that way, the oats will soak and they will be ready the next day or if you can’t wait let it sit for 4-5 hours.
- Topping – After letting it sit, with the chocolate frosting draw the “RIP” word on the Lotus Bicoff Biscuit and insert it on the edge of the overnight oats to create the “headstone“. Crush 1 oreo without the cream and spread it to make the “soil“.
- Ready to eat – Enjoy immediately!
How to make the Chocolate Ganache?
This chocolate sauce has only 3 ingredients! First, you will need to sift the unsweetened cacao powder to avoid clumps! Therefore, mix with maple syrup or honey to give a hint of sweetness. And for the latter add water to thin out the sauce. Pour on top of your oats batter and let refrigerate overnight!
Can make multiple overnight oats recipes?
YES! Overnight oats can be prepared up to 2-3 days in advance for the week. I used to do it whenever I had early morning UNI classes! I only had to grab breakfast straight from the fridge and I was ready to go.
How does this overnight oats taste like?
The oatmeal is chewy as the oats may have soak all the milk! It’s also creamy because of the yogurt layers and the chocolate spread adds an extra chocolatey hint to these oats.
Notes and substitutions
- No rolled oats? Use quick oats! The consistency may change to a porridge. To keep the thick texture add less milk
- No chocolate protein powder? Replace with 1 tbsp honey, maple, date or agave syrup.
